The reversible USB cable you've been dying to own has finally been completed

You know that crazy thing where the USB connector doesn't fit no matter how you turn it, until you actually look at it? Well, finally that will soon be a thing of the past.

Apple fixed one of the most frustrating things about owning an electronic device when it released the Lightning connector, and now the USB 3.0 Promoter Group plans to follow suit. The group announced on Tuesday that the long-awaited USB Type-C connector has finally been completed, which means the next generation of USB cables will be reversible. The new connector is specialized for use with mobile devices, but laptops and tablets will benefit from it as well.

“Interest in the USB Type-C connector has not only been global, but cross-industry as well,” said Brad Saunders, USB 3.0 Promoter Group Chairman. “Representatives from the PC, mobile, automotive and IoT industries have been knocking down our door anticipating this new standard. This specification is the culmination of an extensive, cooperative effort among industry leaders to standardize the next generation USB connector as a long-lasting, robust solution.”

The USB 3.0 Promoter Group hopes that the release of USB Type-C will be the final step in creating a single-cable solution for electronic devices. The new connector is significantly more powerful than the current standard, taking advantage of SuperSpeed USB 10 Gbps performance and USB Power Delivery up to 100W.

Unfortunately, the new connector will not be compatible with modern USB ports, but once USB 3.1 begins to roll out, manufacturers should make the transition fairly quickly.

Nvidia's 192-Core chip for Android

Nvidia made a splash at this year’s CES with the unveiling of its Tegra K1 ARM chip, which included a 64-bit version slated for release later this year. At the Hot Chips conference today, Nvidia released more details about the upcoming chip, which is codenamed Project Denver.

Project Denver is Nvidia’s first custom-designed CPU, and it’s being touted as the first 64-bit ARM processor for Android. The system will pair two Denver CPUs with speeds up to 2.5 GHz with its existing 192-core Kepler architecture. According to Nvidia, the dual-core design provides “significantly higher performance” than rival four- and eight-core mobile processors.

The chip also includes: “7-way superscalar microarchitecture (up to 7 concurrent micro-ops can be executed per clock), a 128KB 4-way L1 instruction cache, a 64KB 4-way L1 data cache, and a 2MB 16-way L2 cache.” For the deeper technical workings of the chip, you can check out this report from Tirias Research.

Nvidia also confirmed that it is working on Android L support for the 64-bit chip. You can expect the first devices packing the new chip to arrive before the end of the year.

If it lives up to expectations, Project Denver will bring desktop level performance to mobile devices while still maintaining power efficiency. We’re trying not to get too hyped up about this, but today’s teaser suggests we’ll have some serious power in our hands this fall.
